Dear Parents/Guardians,
During the month of September, we recognize suicide prevention month. Although this topic may be difficult to broach, it is vital that we, as a community, communicate regarding this very important topic. The intent of the suicide prevention month campaign is to raise awareness, increase knowledge, and break down stigmas concerning suicide. Currently, suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth ages 15-24 in the United States. Anyone can be impacted by suicide regardless of your background or situation. By opening this dialogue, comfort can be found in connectedness with others.
In addition to academic needs, BCPS staff continue to focus on the social emotional needs of our students. The health, safety, and well-being of our students, staff, and community is our top priority at BCPS. It is okay to not be okay. People face silent battles, and acknowledging struggles is a sign of strength, not weakness. In addition to mental health care, it is imperative for individuals struggling with thoughts of suicide to feel connection to family, friends, and their community.
In recognition and support of Suicide Prevention Month, I am including links to some valuable resources provided by the VA Department of Health.
Although prevention is recognized in September, it is important that we continue to communicate on an ongoing basis regarding suicide. Together we can make a difference. No one needs to struggle alone. If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to talk to school counselors and BCPS staff.
Sincerely,
Rick Bolling

Bath County Public Schools will dismiss at 12:30 on Monday, April 8, 2024, due to the timing of the partial solar eclipse.
The National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) has a variety of free resources about safety considerations for the eclipse and how to safely view the eclipse as damage to the eyes is possible viewing the eclipse. Regular sunglasses, swimming goggles, and most camera filters are not safe for looking directly at the sun. BCPS will be sending home solar eclipse glasses for students on Monday, April 8.
Thank you
